As an independent consultant I have the chance to pass on my experience to those engaged at the sharp end of engineering development.

It is important to select a material production route at the start of a design process which has been chosen to provide optimised properties combined with the lowest cost. Repair and recycling requirements have to be designed in from the beginning. The problems of joints between materials and individual elements in structures have to be examined in some detail at the concept stage. Fitness for purpose with associated tolerance requirements have to be studied.
